Of all the government grants that are available, some are directed towards housing and rental assistance. These government housing programs provide those in need some of the most essential help available to low-income individuals and households today.
For many, affording your home bills, car bills, food bills, utility bills and more on a limited income can often be challenging and sometimes even impossible. Not being able to afford all your bills every single month is an experience millions of Americans face each year. However, many people living paycheck-to-paycheck might be unaware that there are many government programs available to help you if you find yourself in need or in a situation where your financial needs cannot be met.
The fact is, most monthly budgets in the U.S. consist largely of housing-related expenses including rent or mortgage payments, energy bills, utilities, or other expenses. So, it is understandable that in times of crisis, you may need some financial assistance covering these types of expenses.
The Housing Choice Voucher Program, which is also referred to as Section 8, is one of the primary government federal programs that help pay for monthly rent. A large portion of your rent is paid directly to your landlord from the government, while you are responsible for paying the remaining monthly balance. The percentage of rent you must pay varies based on your income and other qualifying factors, but most Section 8 recipients pay approximately thirty-three percent.
Are your phone bills too high to afford? The Lifeline Program helps qualified households receive telephone and internet services at discounted pricing. When you qualify for Lifeline, the government pays a portion of your bill to participating telecommunications and internet service providers. Individuals and households who already qualify for or are enrolled in SNAP or other government assistance or benefits programs almost always also qualify for Lifeline.
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is designed to help low-income qualifying households pay for heating and air conditioning expenses. LIHEAP provides federal grants to individual states, which transfer the funds to local government agencies from where the money is disbursed to qualified recipients. The Rural House Repair Loans and Grants program (Section 504) funds grants to qualified homeowners in rural areas who have repair and improvement expenses they cannot afford. First-time homebuyer grants and programs are also available to reduce payment, closing cost and finance charge amounts.
Qualification for these programs all vary based on income, regional economic statistics, the state in which you live and multiple other factors. Section 504 recipients might receive as much as $20,000 (repayable loans), up to $7,500 in free grant money or a combination of both. First-time homebuyers might qualify for zero to six percent down payment options. Keep reading to learn about government grant programs for healthcare.
