The financial hardship for Americans during the coronavirus pandemic was swift and brutal. Unemployment rates reached record highs, and many households could not even afford their housing. Fortunately, the government stepped in to provide three stimulus checks to qualifying Americans. These checks were meant to ease financial burdens and stimulate the United States economy.

Across the nations, Americans held their breath in tandem for any stimulus update, but some citizens struggled to receive the payments they were owed. If you’re unsure if you received all of your stimulus payments or you need to request a payment, read on.

There were three stimulus checks issued to qualifying Americans. The payments of each check were $1,200, $600, and $1,400 per person, respectively. Married couples who filed jointly received one payment that was twice this amount. Families with children received an additional payment for qualifying children of $500, $600, and $1,400 per child, respectively. However, high-income households received a lesser amount or were ineligible to receive payments.

Stimulus checks were issued as a check, IRS debit card, or direct deposit. Americans that had provided their banking information on their recent tax returns typically received their checks via direct deposit. At the same time, other Americans eagerly awaited the arrival of their IRS debit card or check. IRS debit cards worked like standard debit cards and could be used on purchases or to withdraw payments.

If you have not yet received your payment or a stimulus update, you will generally qualify for payments if you:

  • Are a United States citizen or resident alien with a valid Social Security number that is not a dependent of another taxpayer; and
  • You meet income guidelines

However, if you make too much money, you may still be eligible for a lesser payment. Furthermore, you can still receive payments if you did not make any income or have not filed taxes in recent years.

If you have not received a payment, it’s recommended that you update direct deposit for stimulus. You can do this on the IRS website using the Get My Payment tool. Using this online tool will require you to provide your 2018 and/or 2019 tax information and personal information such as your Social Security number, date of birth, and address.
